5 Steps to Creating a SMART Goal [Free Worksheet!]

When I started my life transformation more than five years ago, I wasn’t exactly the best goal setter on the self improvement block. I was ambitious and determined, sure, but I wasn’t organized and hardly ever planned. Now, I know better. And if you are here right now, then you probably do too. Good for you girl! Because having  a long term plan for whatever goal you have makes it more likely for you to succeed! In fact, with a plan of action and a strong will, it’s pretty impossible to fail. So today, I want to show you how to do that with my free SMART Goal Setting Worksheet. But first things first:

 

What is a SMART Goal?  [ Free Smart Goal Worksheet!]

Let me just get this out of the way: There is no such thing as a stupid goal. There, I said it. I feel better now. But a S.M.A.R.T. goal is more than just a goal: It is a goal with a plan of action. When you map out a plan and have a system for achieving what you want, you become a prepared, organized rockstar that can do anything. Got a goal? That’s great. Make it SMART!

Attainable
Realistic
Timely

FIVE STEPS TO CREATING SMART GOALS – WITH THE SMART GOAL SETTING WORKSHEET

Step One: Make your goal Specific. If you want to be happier in life, that’s amazing, but if you don’t get specific on the details, achieving that goal will be less likely. If you want to lose weight, for example, hone in on the details of that goal. Write out what it looks like, how it feels, and the way it will change your life. The more specific you can be about your dream the better.

Step Two: Make your goal Measurable. You want to make more money? Okay great. Turn that dream into a measurable goal that you can visualize. Write out a specific number that is tangible and clear to you. You need to be able to measure your goal as best possible. It makes your goal more meaningful and motivating to associate an “amount” with what you want. Even if your goal is an emotional goal like “finding a boyfriend” or “feeling more happy,” you can still measure it. “How often should I go on dates,” or “How many days out of the week should I be feeling joyful?” Get creative and come up with a way of quantifying your goal.

Step Three: Make your goal Achievable. But remember not to sell yourself short. You are an amazing human capable of amazing things. My motto is: If it’s humanly possible, and I want it enough, it will happen. Just make sure that your goal is realistic for the lifestyle you live, and make sure it doesn’t compromise other important parts of your wellbeing.

Step Three: Make your goal Realistic. You want to save $25,000 this year? If you have a ton of debt and student loans piling up, that may not be a realistic goal for you. Instead, why don’t you modify your goal and aim to reduce your debt by X amount of dollars this year. The last thing you want to do is create some impossible goal for yourself that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and less balanced in your life.

Step Four: Make your Goals Timely: A Goal is a dream with a deadline. Have you ever heard that expression? It’s true. Without a long term plan, it’s harder to stay focused on a goal. Setting a timeline for your goals allows you to get laser focused about what it is you really want knowing you have only a certain amount of time to do it. That’s what a new year resolution is: A timely goal with a 1 year plan. So come up with a deadline.

4 Steps for Finding Happiness

A long time ago, I felt really lost in how to find happiness. I knew what I wanted for myself, and it was simple, really. I just wanted to be happy.

Seriously,  you can’t get more simple than that. But as basic as that goal was, figuring out how to find happiness seemed like the most complicated thing in the world for me to do. It seemed like I had not been happy in forever, and the idea of having to figure out the roadmap for learning how to find happiness at that stage felt really impossible. It seemed overwhelming and stressful.

See, at the time, life was happening “to me” and not “for me.” I felt very much like all these bad things were always happening in my life that I couldn’t do anything about. I was constantly asking myself “why is this happening to me?” because it seemed like bad things were always happening!

But the secret for how to find happiness isn’t found in stupid questions like that. I needed to start asking myself more positive questions so I could create the life I deserver.  So let me share the four simple steps for how to find happiness in your life so you can be a total awesome happiness guru  in your own life!

The Simple Steps for How to Find Happiness

The First Step: Asking Yourself  “Where Am I Right Now?”

The only way I was able to move forward towards a happy life was by recognizing exactly where I was in my dark moments.  Learning how to find happiness only happens once you can figure out what is wrong with the present time. I recommend checking out my post if you’re asking yourself “Why Am I so Unhappy.” So you can get to the true root of the problem.

Once you take a good hard look at your life as it is today, it is easier to figure out what is missing. You need to create your own roadmap to move towards a different location. So ask yourself, “where am I now?” Try figuring out what about your life needs improvement.

How to Find Happiness in Your Life

The Second Step: Removing “Dead End Questions” from Your Language

When times are tough, it is really hard to ask those “dead-end questions” and get stuck on the idea that life sucks. But dead-end questions are those silly questions you are asking yourself that never get you anywhere in life. You may find yourself asking things like this:

Why is my life such a terrible mess?

Why is it so hard for me to be happy?

Why do bad things always happen to me?

Sound familiar? When you play life like a victim, moving forward isn’t possible. If you want to learn how to find happiness you need to start asking yourself different questions.

The questions you ask during your difficult times in life totally shape your future.

So rather than stay stuck in the same negative mindset, start setting moving things in a more positive direction. Turn all those questions into positive questions that will propel you forward so you can take control of your future and start making changes.

TRICK + TIP FOR HOW TO FIND HAPPINESS: When I’m feeling stuck, I make a list of all the negative questions running through my brain on one side of a piece of paper. I list as many dead-end questions and statements as I possibly can. When I am done writing them out, I take a five minute break to clear my mind and reflect on my list.

When I’m ready, I go through each statement one by one making changes. I cross out each negative believe or question and replace it with a positive belief or question on the other side of the paper. This trick definitely helps.

The Third Step: STOP BEING A VICTIM. One of the most valuable lessons I had learned about the journey to finding happiness is that I can’t create it if I live like a victim.

The Events of My life do not shape my destiny. But rather, how I interpret these events and evaluate these experiences.

It is true that every thing that’s happened in your life — good or bad — has brought you to where you are now today. But what is also true is that it isn’t the events that have shaped you, but rather how you interpret those events.

If bad things happen and you interpret them as you living as a victim, you will continue to feel like you can’t control your own life or your own happiness.

But if you see a low moment in your life as an opportunity to grow, then you will be empowered by that experience. You will learn, grow and become stronger with that positive attitude.

If you look at whatever challenge you are facing and tell yourself that you CAN’T change it, or that you aren’t capable of taking control, you will fail. WE are not victims. We are the only ones that hold the key to changing our lives. Don’t fall a victim to your life experiences.

Start Asking the RIGHT Questions: What Will Make You Happy?

Evaluating life’s moments is key to growth. And evaluating something is about asking questions. Positive questions are the key to being happy no matter what life brings you. Because Quality Questions Can Create a Quality life. 

Instead of throwing negativity at the wall with questions that could never help you grow, start asking yourself what positive things you can do to change your life.

Sure, maybe we ask it in different ways, like, “How can I feel more beautiful?” or “How can I feel more comfortable in my skin?” No matter how you phrase it, it’s all boiling down to the same basic longing; the desire for learning how to feel more confident and good about yourself.

In a world where we are constantly struggling to boost our self-esteem, it’s hard to figure out how to feel more confident. That’s probably why you’re reading this post – because you want to know how to feel more confident. Well, all you need is a basic understanding of these simple steps to change how you feel about who you are. So let’s dive in!

How to Feel More Confident- Embrace What You Have.

This is step one in learning how to feel more confident. Because without this first step, you won’t get anywhere. Learning to feel more comfortable in your skin and boost your self-esteem is not about changing who you are.

But I’m guessing maybe you’ve thought that for a while. – Well, nip that belief in the butt right now!

“If I lose weight,” then I will be confident.”

or

“If I got a boob job, then I could feel more confident.”

or how about:

“If I found a boyfriend, then I would finally feel good about myself.”

Any of these questions ring a bell? Sound familiar?

I’ve been there. Trust me. Along my own journey, before I found self love, I was super fixated on all the things I wanted to change about myself. I firmly believed that if I could finally change my body, and my self image, then I would finally end my struggle with how to feel more confident.

It didn’t work that way.

No matter what goals I reached in my life, they never made me feel good about myself the way I wanted them to. No magic lightbulb turned on that suddenly made me find self confidence.

Want to know why?

Because confidence is not something that suddenly sparks the minute you reach a goal or get your idea body: Confidence is a self-love practice that you need to work on every single day of your life.

So, if you are trying to learn how to feel more confident, your first step should not be changing how you look or how you act. Your first step in learning how to feel more confident is looking at who you are right here and right now.

“What is it about me that I like?”

“What is it about who I am that makes me feel good?”

“How can I embrace those feel good feelings more often?”

When you start developing the emotional tools for feeling good about yourself in the present moment, you open the door to self love now, and the possibility of actually growing that love in the future.

Self love is like gardening: You can’t grow something from nothing. You need to plant a seed first.

 

 Step Two for Learning How to Feel More Confident: Understanding The Feelings that Make up Self-Confidence.

Okay, so you’ve done step one for learning how to be more confident. You’ve asked yourself what you like about who you are right here and now. Great! You’ve planted the seed!

Now you are ready for step two: Understanding what exactly makes self-confidence.

See this chart? These are the four solid components for creating a better you and feeling more confident you. When you reflect on these individual areas of your life, I am sure you can come  up with several examples to feel good about. Confidence does not come from one specific area of our lives. Confidence comes from building a solid foundation of multiple emotions.

Understanding that confidence does not come from one specific outlet is important: We are diverse human beings with diverse reasons to feel good.

How to Feel More Confident Step Three: Find a Balance

Even if one of these areas of your life seems super important and valuable to you right now, remember this: Balancing your focus on all four of these areas (and not just one) will help you become more confident and happy. If we show love and care for all four areas of our lives with equal attention, then we can become the confident person we deserve to be. So start asking yourself what you can do to find confidence in EACH Place of your life, not just one of these areas. Write it out if it helps!

Daily journal prompts haven’t always been a part of my happiness practice. When I started learning about self love, I was completely inexperienced and a total non-expert. I didn’t have my shit figured out what-so-ever. But I wanted to. So I did what anyone else does when they are trying to figure something out – I googled things.

This is what I found:

Chant positive affirmations.

Compliment yourself in the mirror every morning.

Tell yourself all the reasons why you are grateful. 

So I tried them in the beginning. And they only made me feel worse. I couldn’t come up with reasons or answers for any of those things, so most of the time my practice felt forced, stiff and full of bologna.

So one day I ditched my google search and came up with my own plan. I took out a pen and paper and started asking myself questions that I thought would help me feel more confident in my life. And thus, I discovered my secret weapon for growing my confidence: Daily Journal Prompts.
