I Auditioned for The Bachelor…

Never, ever, ever in my life did I think I would audition for a reality TV show. Let alone go to a bachelor audition. But I did!

Because somehow, under the influence of nearly 20 girl friends, I was convinced that I should audition to be a contestant on The Bachelor. So there was an open casting call in NYC. And I went. My first ever bachelor audition experience was crazy!

And even my aunt called me and said I should go to the casting call. How come out of nowhere EVERYONE THINKS I SHOULD BE ON THE BACHELOR?

Going to my first ever casting call for the bachelor

So, I wasn’t going to go at first. My first reason for not going was, “I can’t, I have rehearsal.” But when my stage manager texted me that our rehearsal got moved to a different night, I took it as “the sign” to go.

Then I did a photo fashion show with a group of girl friends to help me figure out the perfect outfit. I got my hair blown out, got my nails done, and perfected my winged liner.

As I sat on the Long Island Railroad, I had many thoughts running through my head:

“This is hilarious. I am going to a bachelor audition.”
“They’d never even cast me.”
“But what if they did?”
“OMG what if I’m ‘crying girl?'”
“OH MY GAWD THEYRE TOTALLY GONNA MAKE ME LOOK LIKE WEIRD DISNEY FREAK GIRL.”
“Don’t bring up Disney, Gabrielle.”
“I really hope there’s wine at this thing.”

HERE I GO. I’M WALKING TO ABC STUDIOS TO BE WEIRD DISNEY FREAK GIRL ON THE BACHELOR.

If you’ve ever watched any reality tv show, you’ll often hear someone say, “I’m not here to make friends.” Hey, I like friends. Maybe I can make some friends at this shindig. Would the girls be bitchy and stand offish? Would they look at my face and just know that I am crying girl or Disney-freak girl. It turns out everyone I met was so sociable, nice and BEAUTIFUL! Why are there this many beautiful, single girls in NYC?! Guys, get your SHIT together, you’re about to lose us to the next Bachelor!

Well I got very lucky and showed up about 30 minutes early and was in, what appeared to be the ABC dining area, by 6 pm. I assume it was the dining area because I looked like the ABC Commissary in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. God dammit, I’m being weird Disney girl.

So here’s the run down of how a Bachelor audition works:

Step 1: Walk through metal detector.

Step 2: Pick up application as everyone behind the table tells you look so beautiful BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU ARE WEAK. There will be tons of pens on the table that say THE BACHELOR. Hold onto this. Cherish this. This is may be the closest thing you get to actually being on The Bachelor

Step 3: Walk over to man in suit and get your photograph taken. I had to write my name and phone number on a white board and pose with it while they took my picture (why didn’t I bring my head shots?!)

Step 4: Fill out the said application for bachelor audition. There were some pretty normal questions on there. They asked questions about my hobbies, interests, how many serious relationships I’ve had and why they didn’t work out, my occupation, what I look for in a guy, and why I want to be on the Bachelor. Throw THE BACHELOR pen in your bag discretely.

Step 5: Attend a middle school birthday party and play musical chairs with all the nice girlfriends you just met. Literally. We just sat around a table and moved from one chair to the next, waiting to be called for a face-to-face interview. Why isn’t there a better system than this?! During this time though I got to chat with more girls, add a few on Facebook, and got some compliments on my Kylie lip kit. Thanks, ladies!!

Step 6: Pretend you’re on reality television. Once musical chairs were over, I got called up to hand in my application to a woman named Lauren. Lauren hooked up a microphone to my dress, had me look in the camera and say my name, age, and where I’m from. It took me back to the days of chat rooms (ASL?). Once again I got to hold a white board with my name and phone number on it. Then Lauren asked me questions very similar to the ones in my application packet. I explained my job as a speech-language pathologist, my passion for fitness, and my past relationships. On the topic of fitness, Lauren asked what I do.

Gabby: “I actually started a fitness Instagram a few years ago and it’s grown tremendously. I’m studying personal training so I can go in the direction of online training programs!”

Lauren: “Wow that’s cool! How many followers do you have?”

G: *bashfully* “Um, 26K…”

L: “Oh my GOD!”

I think that just helped me.

My final question was why I wanted to be on the Bachelor.

Um, because real life men suck? Because tinder is awful?

G: “Well, I haven’t had a serious relationship in 4 years, and just no one’s swept me off my feet. I think it’s time to try something different and exciting!”

And with that it was a handshake, a “good luck” from Lauren, and a quick exit. I noticed as I left the line wrapped around the block. Thank goodness I came early!

So here’s my advice if you ever want to go to a bachelor audition: Dress comfortably. Doll yourself up. Arrive early. And just be yourself!! Because even if you don’t get on the show, it’ll make a great story to tell your friends and family. And maybe your therapist.

P.S. There was no wine at this thing.

Gabby Talks: The Whole Deal On Whole 30 –

Do you think you could go 30 days without grains, dairy, legumes, soy, sugar, and alcohol? I certainly thought I couldn’t. But I did.

I have just completed my first round of Whole 30. What is Whole 30? Kinda… what it sounds like: 30 days of eating nothing but whole foods. Whole foods… 30 days… Whole 30! No grains, dairy, legumes, soy, sugar, and alcohol for an entire month. First things first, this is not a diet. This is a program, a science experiment, with your body. It is about nutrition, changing your relationship with food, and learning what food groups may be triggering negative reactions in your body. These food groups are picked for good reason. These are the groups that are known to be triggers for certain sensitivities and allergic reactions.

MY Decision to Try Whole 30

A person who decides to try Whole 30 may try the program for a variety of reasons. One of the most popular reasons is to lose weight… but what intrigued me most about Whole 30 was the extensive list of non-scale victories. Often times, people focus on victories based on what the scale says. You know what I say? F^@& the scale. The scale is just a number. It cannot tell you how good you feel, how much better you’re sleeping, how your pants are fitting better. The scale is a little bitch. Anyway, I was not doing Whole 30 to lose weight.

I’m 25 and I have been dealing with on and off acne since I was 19. I’m finding the older I get, the worse my skin gets. I started noticing when I ate more dairy in a weekly period, such as cheese, ice cream, or Greek yogurt, I had far more breakouts than I normally do. I suspected dairy is a trigger for my acne, and rather than taking pills or medications from a dermatologist, I’d much rather treat my skin with a holistic approach. My skin is the first reason I decided to go Whole 30. It was Definitely worth it.

The second reason is my love of ice cream. Oh… ice cream. My father once said the Mister Softee Ice Cream truck song should be my wedding song. He was serious and not joking. I crave ice cream at least 5 days a week. Some days it’s so hard to fight the urge, and even a paleo-style banana “nice cream” won’t satisfy the craving. I believed Whole 30 could break us up. After all, ice cream is dairy, and this craving could be contributing to my skin issues!

If trying Whole 30 is something that interests you, I recommend checking out Whole30.com and reading the literature behind the program. The book you absolutely need is Whole 30 by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig, and their other book It Starts With Food is incredibly helpful as well. By doing the research, you will learn all the rules in full detail as well as learn amazing, compliant recipes.

So now you know why I started and how you can start. Here are the things I learned during my Whole 30 experience.

WHOLE 30 TAKEWAWAYS

My sugar addiction is real. Like, really real. I wanted to eat all the dried fruit IN DA WORLD the first few days. Every time I went towards a bag of dried mangoes I had to say to myself, “am I eating this because I am hungry? Or because I’m having a sugar craving?” Hungry and nothing else is available? Eat the mango. Bored? Don’t even think about touching it. This was hard for me because I work in a nut-free school, so I couldn’t keep cashews or almonds in my desk. I had to really moderate how I was feeling: hunger or having a craving.

SWYPO. Or as I read it in my head “swipe-o,” which sounds like an online dating app term for a swipe accident. For example, “Oh my gosh, I had a total swipe-o last night. I swiped left for a hot, blue-eyed plastic surgeon when I meant to swipe right!” Ok, but that’s not what SWYPO means even though I like my new terminology. SWYPO is an acronym for Sex With Your Pants On. No… there is no dry humping involved in Whole 30. The Whole 30 program cautions against using paleo-fied versions of “junk foods” and noncompliant foods. So don’t you dare think about making a gluten-free bread out of coconut flour and almond meal. Replica junk food is still junk food and you are just trying to trick your brain. If you keep trying to trick your brain, you may eventually give into the real deal. Like… sex with your pants on. Sex with your pants on is gonna feel good for a while, until eventually, you’re gonna want to take your pants off. And then you’re screwed. Maybe literally or figuratively.

WHOLE 30 MEAL IDEAS

Your brain and the notion of “breakfast food.” We are trained to think that things like eggs, pancakes, waffles, and oatmeal serve the purpose of being breakfast food. Of all these things, eggs are the only Whole 30 compliant food, and you’ll get sick of those real fast (the sight of them made me nauseous on Day 3). You will quickly learn food is food. This may mean eating leftover dinner for breakfast. There is no such thing as breakfast food. Fuel your body.

Just friggin’ Google it. Don’t know something? Google is your best friend. 90% of the time, someone already asked the same thing you’re wondering on a Whole 30 forum, so, no, your question is not stupid and you are not alone. Your body may react in ways it never has before to sugar detox, and you’ll need Google! Example (stop reading if you don’t want a TMI moment); I have never had a yeast infection in my entire life, but in my first week of Whole 30, I got one… which then proceeded to becoming an ongoing joke with Lauren about the “Yeaster Bunny.” THIS JOKE WILL NEVER DIE. I was also on an antibiotic, so that definitely played a role, but I had never had one before! With the help of my good friend Google, I learned some people do indeed get yeast infections as their bodies’ pH levels are adjusting and changing due to the lack of sugar. Also… Google recipes!!! Guys, the Internet is a beautiful place. I cannot tell you how many times I got asked, “Where do you get your Whole 30 recipes?” Um, I Googled “Whole 30 meatloaf” and clicked the first link? BOOM. Rocket science.

Forget #WineNotWednesday. I work in special education and my days can be pretty stressful. Needless to say, I often turn to a glass of wine for a little therapy. Or ice cream. GOD, I LOVE ICE CREAM. Well guess what? On Whole 30, comforting yourself with food is nonexistent. You now have to get creative! Take a bubble bath, read a good book… try something from my post about how to treat yo self! However, by your second or third Friday night out, you will really miss chilling out with a cocktail. I missed tequila so much, that I asked my friend if I could smell her margarita. Oh, what a whiff it was <3

Speaking of drinking, social situations will be hard. I did Whole 30 with two birthday parties to attend to and Easter. You may feel a little out of place, but most likely, your friends and family will be super understanding. And if you’re doing Whole 30 for all the good reasons there are to do it, they’re going to respect you for it and support you.

Your cooking is going to get a lot more creative. I stuck guacamole in a baked sweet potato, and cooked okra for the first in my life. Loved. It. All.

WHOLE 30 MEAL IDEAS

#MealPrep. I cannot stress the importance of meal prepping during this experience. We are so used to grabbing whatever food we keep on hand. Stock up on Whole 30 approved snacks for emergencies, prepare most of your breakfasts and lunches for the week, and rely on leftovers. This will make your Whole 30 SO MUCH less stressful.

WHOLE 30 MEAL IDEAS

Triple read your labels. Seriously, sugar is the devil and these food companies sneak it into EVERYTHING. You may think something is safe, but you’re wrong. I can’t tell you how many times I read a label, thought, “Oh, this is safe.” Read it again to double check, “Yep. Still safe.”

*Takes a sip while reading label for a third time and sees honey is the third to last ingredient*

*Spits out kombucha everywhere*

*Cries and has a brief panic attack*

“No, that was definitely not safe.”

Technically if you cheat you’re supposed to start over your ENTIRE WHOLE 30. But in these one or two small accidents I had, I said, “ah let’s move on.” A small sip did not bring back my cravings, nor was I purposely giving into temptation. Your Whole 30, you decide if you want to start over or not.

It’s going to become second nature. You’re going to feel so good about 10 days in, and it will become routine. I never felt sorry for myself, I never felt miserable, I never felt deprived. The rules will stop feeling like strict rules, and you will think, “I choose this because it makes me feel good.” Every now and then you may think, “Why the heck am I doing this?” In those moments, just remember, “It’s only 30 days.”

So how am I now after 30 days? I have bounds of energy, I am sleeping better and falling asleep more easily, my skin is clearer (praise), and I haven’t craved ice cream in two weeks. No, I don’t have perfect skin now. Yes, I’ll want ice cream again soon, and when I want it, I’ll have it. But am I an improved version of the Gabby I was 30 days ago? Yes. Am I proud of myself? Sure am. Do I think you can do this? Yes, I do. If I can, so can you.

I am now entering the reintroduction phase. I will slowly reintroduce the foods I eliminated, one group at a time, to find out what foods I may have sensitivities to. I’ll now learn for sure if dairy causes my acne, or if other food groups are contributing too. I’m also going to learn what foods make me feel sluggish and bloated. I know… I gave up goodies for an entire month and I still need to wait to have them all back! But I’m really excited to learn all there is about me and how my body responds to certain foods.

Winter is finally upon us. Now that we’ve experienced the winter solstice, the days will slowly get longer. And when I say “slowly” I really mean “at a glacial pace.” Until sometime in March, you can expect it to be pitch black outside whenever you wake up for work, and when you leave work. It’s a total bummer I know. But it doesn’t have to be! There are plenty of ways you can treat yo self to feel happy in the middle of these winter time woes.

Between these short days, paying off those holiday credit card bills (did I buy more gifts for myself or others?!), and trying to catch up on that sleep from your New Year’s Eve bash, winter can be downright stressful and put you in a funk.

Here’s a few things you can do for yourself as we bounce back from the holiday season to give yourself a special treat.

Four Awesome Ways to Treat Yo Self This Winter

Treat Yo Self  Tip 1: Get a facial. This is my top favorite thing to do for myself, although it’s a little pricey. Our skin reacts to the change in weather, and a facial can help balance your skin as it faces the cold winter air. Ever since I’ve started getting facials regularly, I’ve noticed amazing changes in my skin. You can even do a mask at home, like I mentioned in my other awesome post about ways to feel beautiful.

Tip 2: Snuggle up with a movie. Sometimes we just need to chill out by ourselves! Pick a movie you’ve never seen, pop some popcorn, and relax! Snuggling up to some random chick flick you used to love and haven’t watched in forever is a great way to enjoy your YOU time. This past week I’ve been watching the original Star Wars trilogy. Yes, I’m a little late to the Star Wars party. Do you prefer a TV show binge? Do it! Just don’t pick Scandal, you’re wasting your time (this season BLOWS).

Tip 3: Focus on a new goal and plan for it. This can be anything you want it to be! It can be something simple, like finally cleaning out your bedroom closet. Or something huge, like putting money in your savings so you can move. Right now my goal is to have a strong and safe training season, and finish my half marathon this coming February.

Tip 4: Create a new daily ritual. Perhaps start each and every day with a positive mantra. You can try doing yoga once a day (I recommend Yoga with Adriene’s 30 Days of Yoga Challenge … it’s free!) I like making a cup of decaffeinated tea before bedtime. Give it a whirl! And if you want to add a shot of brandy to your tea and make it a hot toddy… I won’t judge you. Whatever it is, pick something small that brings a little more joy into your life and try to make time to do it once a day!

We are our own worst critics. Remember that scene ha Mean Girls when Gretchen, Karen, and Regina are standing in front of the mirror and criticizing the way they look?

“My nail beds suck!”

It’s a funny scene, but it mirrors the reality of what we do to ourselves. If I stare at a mirror for too long, I start to judge my acne scars, small laugh lines that are starting to peek through, or the way my nostrils flare when I smile really hard…

In those moments I need to remind myself to step back and tell myself that there are so many things about me that are beautiful.

And there are simple, daily tasks that you do for yourself can help you feel confident and feelbeautiful, both inside and out every single day!

Try incorporating a few of these tasks during your day, or even just a few times a week, to radiate beauty!

Small tips and tricks to make yourself Feel Beautiful Every Day!

 

Make a list! This is a tip I picked up from Fit, Fierce, and Fabulous! by Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott, of the Tone It Up Fitness Program. In a journal, notebook, laptop, the notes section on your phone, etc., make a list of all the things you like about yourself! Don’t be shy or modest. This is a list for your eyes only! Start with your physical characteristics (those are usually easier to come up with.) Maybe you love your eyes, your shiny hair, or the way you smile! Once you get those physical qualities down on your list of what makes you feel beautiful, start to dig a little deeper. What would your friends say about you? Are you a generous person? A thoughtful friend who always listens? Can you make people laugh? Put it all out there for you to see and appreciate and feel beautiful! Now move on to the things you’re good at! Are you a fantastic chef? What about dancing? Are you good at any sports? Once you’ve made your list, read it over, and just look at how amazing you are!

Give yourself a facial! I have been a facemask junkie since I was in the sixth grade. There’s something about a facial that just makes you feel so clean and radiant! Find a good quality mask that works well with your skin. I love Aztec Indian Healing Clay mixed with apple cider vinegar when I’m having a breakout.

On a normal day, I like Tone It Up’s K+K Beach Clay Masque with Sea Algae. It’s wonderful for all skin types, very hydrating and balancing, and smells amazing. It makes me feel so beautiful after I use it!  If you feel like going all out, visit an aesthetician and get a facial professionally done! They’ll extract your pores and do all sorts of things you can’t have done at home!

Meditate. Meditation can make some people uncomfortable, simply because they don’t know much about it or, and they aren’t familiar with the proper technique. If you’re a beginner, try this for starters: Pick a quiet spot in your home that doesn’t offer you any distractions or interruptions. Make sure it is an area where you can sit up right or lay down comfortably. I like using my yoga mat for my meditation time. Set a timer on your phone for 5 minutes. This will keep you from wondering “how long as it been?” and will help you stay focused and relaxed without worrying about the clock. When you are ready and calm, take a deep inhale and release it with a big exhale. Try not to let your mind wander, and focus on your breath. After a few deep inhales and exhales, once your mind is calm, start repeating the following mantra over and over again. “I am beautiful. I am confident. I am radiant.” Tell yourself whatever your body and mind needs to hear. When the timer goes off, finish with one deep and final inhale and exhale. Keep that positive affirmation going throughout the day, and find opportunities to tell yourself  “I am beautiful” to remind yourself how beautiful you truly are. The more you say something, the more you believe it.

Try a new make up tutorial to feel beautiful! Sometimes, all we need is a change from our regular routine, and changing up our make up look can help! Try something new and exciting to feel beautiful! Do you typically do soft eyeliner? Try going for a cat eye! Soft pinks are your favorite lipstick hue? Go rock a bold red! When I want to try something new, I find a makeup tutorial on YouTube. My favorite YouTube makeup artist is Carli Bybel. She has such a positive outlook and always starts her tutorials with an inspiring quote. Beautiful both inside and out!

Get your hair did. Seriously, treat yoself, girl.  Feel Beautiful ! When I’m having a bad day, nothing makes me feel as good as going to Dry Bar and getting my hair done. Make that look last with some dry shampoo! Or if getting your hair done isn’t your thing, get your nails done! Anyway you can pamper yourself will put you in a good mood and make you feel prettier than you already are!

Sweat it out! Whenever I put on a cute workout outfit for a class at my gym, a SoulCycle workout, or my own personal sweat session… I feel sexy and badass. I feel beautiful. For real. Try it and see. Watch yourself in the mirror as your ponytail flips on your spinning bike, or think about your inner confidence as you punch, block, and kick butt in your kickboxing class! You’ll strut out of the gym like you’re Beyonce! Feel beautiful just thinking about it? I thought so. Plus, the endorphins are going to make your body buzz and put you in such a good mood and make you feel beautiful!

As Elle Woods once said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make people happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.

Stop comparing yourself to others. I know, easier said than done. When I wanted to kick the habit of comparing myself to other people, or to stop any negative thought about myself, the “rubber band trick” was a great way to take control. Don’t know about it? Wear a rubber band around your wrist, (no, your hair tie won’t do for this) and any time you have a negative thought about yourself or compare yourself to other people, snap the rubber band against your wrist. The snap will shock your mind, and well, snap you out of it. 

Just remember, take care of your mind and body, believe you are beautiful, and I promise you will feel beautiful.

I Choose Me – Why Being Single is an Opportunity to Grow

Being Single: It’s that joyful time of year. The time to gather with your loved ones and celebrate the holidays. You’re sitting at the dinner table with your family, and everyone’s catching up, sharing stories about their lives. If you’re single, like me, you can expect to hear questions like, “So is there anyone new in your life?” “Any boys?” “Why are you single?” and my grandpa’s personal favorite: “When am I going to see my grandchild get married?”

I Choose Me Being Single

I’ve been single for three years now.

I mean, in the past three years, I have dipped a toe in the dating pool once or twice, but I have not been in a committed relationship since 2012. But if you asked me back then why I was single, I would shrug, give you an, “I don’t know” response.
Then I’d probably go cry about the fact that I was single later on (thanks for reminding me, buck-o.)
But now, the answer has changed. The answer is simply that I choose to be single; I choose myself.

Both the serious relationships I have had, and the short-lived romances I have had (and will have) taught me more and more about myself, my interests, and the qualities I want in the person I will spend the rest of my life with. I have felt “the spark” maybe…three times now in my life. Some people believe the spark doesn’t exist, but I am a full believer in the spark. Clearly, those three sparks have not been the spark of Mr. Right. But that doesn’t mean those relationships were meaningless. Each one was exciting in its own unique way, and taught me that even after love and heartache, you can fall in love again.

I choose Me, Being Single

 

I have exchanged numbers in a bar, swiped right on a dating app, been set up through a friend… I’ve tried a handful of dating strategies in our modern world. There have been potential men, definitely. But the second I’m just “not feeling it,” I choose me.

I will “never settle for anything less than butterflies,” as Carrie Bradshaw once said.

 

I Choose Me Being Single

In the past three years of choosing myself, I fell in love with me. Until recently, I didn’t realize how important that was.

And no, that realization was not brought on by that catchy Hailee Steinfeld song.

After my last break up, it took me a while to realize there was a lot I didn’t like about myself: the way I viewed my body image, the way I addressed my parents, my stage fright when I performed, the way I over-shared parts of my life on social media to get attention.

I needed to be single and stop putting someone else before me. I needed to take care of myself and change how I viewed myself, and how I treated the people that will always be an important part of my life.

Now, I’m not perfect. I still find parts about my life and relationships that I need to tweak and heal, but by being single and staying single, I have learned to love and care for myself.

There are days, nights, weeks… where I feel pretty lonely. During those times, I reflect. If you are single, and if you are ever feeling lonely, I encourage you to reflect on the people you do have in your life, because they are there for you, and they love you. Sure, it isn’t romance, but with them, with people who understand you, you can never be alone.

And they, too, want you to love yourself.
So if you are being single, please don’t be sad. Choose yourself, and you will find balance and much more happiness once you love yourself.
